Port U14s boys had a great 41 - 31 win over New Ross in their first Leinster League Phase 1 game of the 22/23 season. These two teams were very well matched, with only 5 points separating them going into the last 7 minutes. port opened the scoring in teh first 5 minutes through outhalf Killian James making a strong run down the right hand side from halfway, touching down under the posts for him to convert his own score. New Ross hit back quickly before Portarlington settled into their game playing with a strong wind behind them. Further first half tries through Sean Maree and Ryan Scully had Port up at half time.Playing against the wind in the second half Port protected their ball wall and made hard yards through their forwards before the backs could open up and stretch the New Ross defense. Another brace Killian James had Port comfortable but to New Ross credit them came back strongly during the third quarter to put pressure on Port before a clever scrum half snipe by Sean Keogh put 12 between the teams again. New Ross scored a great cross field kick try under the posts to get 5 back between the sides, but pressure by port allowed Sean Maree to pick up a loose ball 10 meters out for him to power over for the final try, his second. Up front Kyle O Brien, Aidan O Reilly, Ryan Scully and Robert Whittle, with the other forwards, kept the power and pressure on. In the back line Sean Malone marshalled well at 15 and Hugh Melaniphy and Jack Bennett brough real danger on the wings, with the half back and midfield partnership of Sean Keogh, Killian James, Max o reilly and Sean Maree cause real trouble for the opposition. An away game this saturday in Moate against the midland warriors awaits.
