The Falcons picked up a convincing win on Sunday in Portarlington RFC as they overcame a strong Mullingar test.

Head Coach Cassie Dunne had a strong squad to choose from, despite injuries to a number of players, and the starting 15 got off the mark early as they ran in two tries within the first 10 minutes. The hard yards were gained by strong runners with excellent support play all around the pitch and a third try looked inevitable until the dangerous Mullingar runners capitalised on a handling error as the Falcons threatened and ran in a try from deep in their own territory. After 15 minutes the score was 10-7 and the game was in the balance, the next score was going to be critical. The Falcons upped the intensity and some excellent defence from the Mullingar team held strong until a great handling move put the home side in under the posts which was converted for a 17-7 lead. The game was a real arm wrestle as both teams battled for the upper hand in the game. The killer blow came a few minutes before the break when an excellent interchange of passed between backs and forwards resulted in the bonus point try which was converted to see a 24-7 lead at the break.

The second half started as the first half was played with great movement and handling from both sides, it was a real feast of rugby for the supportive spectators in Lea Rd. An eight minute blitz from the Falcons from the 10th to 18th minute in the half put the game beyond the away side as the score quickly reached 43-7. Mullingar were not finished as their impressive back line once again attacked and ran in a score under the posts which was converted to bring the score to 43-12. This try was the final score for Mullingar but the home side weren’t finished as they kept up the pressure and with some strong running and support lines eventually paid dividends. Before the final whistle the Falcons finished off with two converted tries for a final score of 57 – 12.
It was a sad day for the squad as they said farewell to Caoilfhionn Culliton as she heads off for a year in Australia. The Falcons take over top spot in the league from Barnhall who don’t play until next weekend. The next game out is on Nov 3rd as they travel to Carlow to take on the coyotes.
