U14 Boys v Malahide RFC
Portarlington U14s travelled to Malahide RFC in wet and damp conditions, with several players out sick and unable to make the journey. This meant a huge shift was required from the starting 15, many of whom lined out in unfamiliar positions – and they delivered a courageous performance.
The first half began brightly, with both teams going head-to-head in the early exchanges. Malahide eventually gained the upper hand and crossed for a well-earned opening try. Port responded immediately. From a well-executed ruck and clean delivery to the backline, the ball was moved sharply to captain Thoma McGrath, who showed brilliant footwork to beat three defenders before diving over the line to open Port’s account.
The second half saw Malahide apply strong pressure, but Port’s defence held firm for the first ten minutes with some outstanding tackling and organisation. Malahide then found another gear and managed to run in four additional tries.
Despite losing Sam Petriw to injury with eight minutes remaining, Port kept fighting. Reduced to 13 men for the final quarter, the boys continued to show massive heart, pushing forward with several promising plays and refusing to give up until the final whistle.
There were exceptional performances across the pitch today, including standout displays from Thoma McGrath (C), Dan Carroll, Harry Robinson, Ciarán Moore, Jack Turley and Sean Kiernan.
Man of the Match deservedly went to Sam Petriw for his work rate, bravery, and impact throughout the game.
A challenging day on the scoreboard, but a proud performance full of passion, teamwork, and Portarlington spirit, one to be proud of.
To cap off the day, the tea and sambos kindly provided afterwards went down an absolute treat and lifted the spirits after a tough battle
