U14 Boys Match Report

Portarlington U14 Boys made the trip to Monkstown for the second time this season in what proved to be a defining League Round 6 playoff. This was a day to remember for the lads — not for the scoreline, but for the level of rugby they encountered and the character they showed throughout. They came face to face with a well-disciplined and highly structured Monkstown side, and while the result did not go their way, it did not reflect the considerable effort and physicality Port brought to every phase of the game.
Captain Sean Fitzpatrick set the tone with a word of encouragement to his teammates just as the whistle sounded for kick-off. Monkstown kicked deep and Port collected, with Tommy Walker immediately making a dashing break down the left wing before being put into touch. The resulting lineout was claimed cleanly by Finn Costello and Port advanced with real intent.
Aidan Scully carried hard into contact, putting Monkstown under immediate pressure and winning Port their first scrum of the game from a knock-on. Thoma McGrath put the ball in and collected sharply to feed Michael Owens, who carried aggressively into Monkstown territory. Port dominated the opening five minutes, keeping constant pressure on their hosts — but Monkstown held firm.
On the sixth minute, Monkstown collected a loose ball at a ruck and moved it quickly to an overlapping backline, finishing clinically for their first try, 7-0. Port responded immediately, advancing beyond halfway and pinning Monkstown inside their own 22 for a spell. However, Monkstown won a scrum for a knock-on and on the tenth minute executed another perfectly-timed backline overlap to score again, making it 14–0.
Port refused to be deflated. On thirteen minutes, as Port constructed textbook ruck after ruck and pressed towards the Monkstown line, Ciarán Moore received the ball on the fourth phase and drove powerfully over to break Port's scoreless run. Bradley Cooper stepped up and added the conversion, bringing the score to 14–7.
Monkstown hit back from the restart, breaking through Port's defence on the wing on seventeen minutes to make it 19–7. Port dug in once more. Vice-captain Tom Coen received a pass from Bradley Cooper at pace across the Monkstown 22, shrugging off four defenders before touching down for a superb individual try. Cooper converted again — 19–14 — and Port were very much in this game as half-time approached.
The closing minutes of the half were frustrating. Monkstown stole a ruck ball and sent a penalty kick deep into Port's 22. Port could not recover it in time and Monkstown added another try before the break, sending the sides in at 22–14.

Port regrouped at the interval, but the physical demands of the game were beginning to show — some knocks were being carried and this was a different, faster, more intense type of rugby than this group had faced before.

Port kicked off the second period with purpose, doing everything in their power to break through Monkstown's well-organised defence. Michael Owens and Ciarán Moore were outstanding in defence with several crucial try-saving tackles when Monkstown threatened. Sean Fitzpatrick, Luca Hynes, Aidan Scully, Oisín Geoghegan and Bradley Cooper all made brilliant attacking runs, while Tom Coen, Finn Costello and Jack McDonald controlled the lineouts with composure. Thoma McGrath was excellent at scrum half, delivering quick, accurate ball to the backline throughout. Seán Kiernan covered his defensive channels well, and Arran Dunne made the final tackle of the game, preventing yet another Monkstown try.
Despite textbook rucks, well-won lineouts, and some excellent ball movement across the back line, Port could not prevent Monkstown from running in four further tries in the second half. The hosts' positional awareness and clinical finishing in the second period proved the difference on the day.
The scoreline today does not tell the real story. This group of players did nothing wrong in their set plays, their attack structure, or their defensive lines. They simply met a tough, well-drilled team who were operating at a high level. The experience gained today — learning how to manage a faster, more physical game and compete right to the final whistle — will be invaluable for this squad's development. They have every reason to hold their heads high.
