3. Coaching Plan Under 9’s


Passing/ Handling

Passing Ball backwards along line 4-5 players- Good warm-up drill- Warm-up with ball!
Walking
Jogging
Coach in centre of player circle, passing to alternate players- Good match day warm-up
Players stationary
Players jogging round coach
Two coaches facing each other one with ball, player comes forward receives the pass and
gives pass through the hands.

Basic Ball Skills

Players split into two groups, each group in single file behind a cone- cones approx 20 ft
apart. Player runs with ball to player at opposite cone to transfer ball:
Pass ball to partner
Hand off ball to partner
Place ball for partner to pick up
Introduce side step with centre cone
Toss ball and catch
Roll ball

Contact Skills

Modified Tackling
Tackle laws- height etc
Side on tackle
Falling- basic ball placement
Introduce tackle bag

Ruck

Introduce ball carrier driving into coach/ tackler who is using collision tackle bag
Ball carrier places ball
Support drives coach/ tackler away from the ball
2nd support arrives and takes the ball

Maul

Introduce carrier held up in tackle and maul forming. (Happens in actual games players need to understand basics)
Coach should focus on: objectives of player 1,2 and 3 joining the maul
Body positions
Off side
Getting the ball back
Winning opposition ball in maul
“Use it or lose it”

Simulations

Small grid two attackers against one defender
Start from opposite ends of grid
Communication
Carry ball in two hands
Timing of pass- draw defender
Dummy/ side step
Stop/ start coaching highlighting options
Develop to 3 attackers against 2 defenders
Introduce basic support to tackled player

Training Matches
o Tip Rugby
o Full contact matches

Small games- maximum 8 per side
Passing
Run straight carry ball in two hands Communication
Tackling- coaching focus on this area
Player involvement
Sporting conduct
Non-contested scrums- 3 man
Non-contested lineouts- 2 man
Referee and explain offside at breakdown
Referee, coach and explain releasing the ball on the ground
Stop/ start coaching highlighting options
Introduce referee’s decision is final
