4. Coaching Plan Under 10’s


Passing/ Handling

Passing Ball backwards along line 4-5 players running forward- Good warm-up drill- Warm-up with ball!
Coach in centre of player circle, passing to alternate players- Good match day warm-up
Players stationary
Players jogging round coach
Two coaches facing each other one with ball, player comes forward receives the pass and gives pass through the hands.
Add second player
Add second set of coaches for second passes

Basic Ball Skills

Square grid with small number of players at each cone/ corner. Players run to partner at opposite cone in square. Runners avoiding each other at centre of square
Pass ball to partner
Hand off ball to partner
Place ball for partner to pick up
Side step
Roll ball and trap with feet

Contact Skills

Tackle bag- Warm up
Side Tackle
Tackle from side on moving opponent
Front tackle
Walking pace- tackler bends and takes carrier at the top of thighs, lifts and places back on feet
Walking pace- tackler bends and drives into the ball carrier driving him backwards- Develop carrier passing out of tackle to support runner
Falling- ball placement

Ruck

Ball carrier to drive into coach/ tackler who is using collision tackle bag
Ball carrier places ball
Support drives coach/ tackler away from the ball
2nd support arrives and takes the ball
Simulate ruck in small grid
Ball carrier walks into collision
Goes to ground and places ball
Second man in competes with tackler
Additional man joins ruck for each team
Coaching focus on competing for ball and protecting own ball, body positions, decision making and laws

Maul

Carrier held up in tackle and maul forming. (Happens in actual games player need to understand basics)
Coach should focus on: objectives of player 1,2 and 3 joining the maul- Communication
Body positions
Off side
Getting the ball back
Winning opposition ball in maul
“Use it or lose it”- Communication
Driving
Laws- driving opponent out, not taking a man’s legs etc

Scrum

Non-contested scrums- 3 man
Practice alignment of scrum half and backs and plays from scrum
One against one scrummaging using equally matched players: Body position, straight back, balance

Lineouts

Non-contested lineouts- 2 man
Practice alignment of scrum half and backs and plays from lineout

Simulations

Small grid –Vary complexity and objectives- Ball in two hands
2 attackers v 1 defender
3 attackers v 2 defenders
2 attackers v 3 defenders
Etc etc
Introduce option of breakaway runner slowing down and turning round to find support runners

Training Matches
o Tip Rugby
o Full contact matches

Small games- maximum 8 per side
Passing
Communication/ Support Play
Run straight with ball in two hands
Tackling- coaching focus on this area
Sporting conduct
Non-contested scrums
Non-contested line outs
Ruck/ maul
Referee and explain offside at breakdown
Referee, coach and explain releasing the ball on the ground
Stop/ start coaching highlighting options
Referee’s decision is final
